Rachael Newman

Rachael was raised in a small New England town nestled amongst maple trees and colonial homes. Before leading trips for Bold Earth, Rachael completed her undergraduate degree and became a certified high school English teacher. She has since balanced an eclectic array of jobs and acquired the title(s) of: freelance writer, Therapeutic Recreation Director at the Alzheimer's Resource Center of Connecticut, reading and mathematics tutor, and substitute teacher. During college, Rachael was the co-editor of her university's international literary magazine, The Helix. She traveled all over the nation to promote and expose the publication and met with writers, publishers and readers alike. In the summer of 2007, Rachael joined The Kosciuszko Foundation and wandered over to Tczew, Poland where she taught English to a group of lovable Polish high school students. In 2009, she ventured overseas once again and taught English in multiple regions of Northern Italy. Rachael is a Wilderness First Responder and holds certification in Lifeguarding and CPR. Her wandering feet have led her to explore Eastern Mexico, Spain, France, and bits of Switzerland. Though she is unable to resist the lure of an international adventure, Rachael simply adores exploring on American soil.

What BOLD EARTH means to me?: Bold Earth is an extremely unique and life-altering experience that fosters delicate relationships between campers themselves and the wilderness that so richly and beautifully surrounds them. Bold Earth provides teenagers the opportunity to mentally and physically challenge themselves in multiple facets. Bold Earth inspires passion, patience, responsibility and encourages campers to respect not only each other, but the world we live in. Bold Earth instills in each person unparalleled confidence and memories that will remain with them for the entirety of their life.

Favorite Quote: "I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is'." -Kurt Vonnegut

What I do when I'm not at BOLD EARTH: When I am not working, you'll find me: Reading a variety of books, scribbling poems and doodles in yellowed notebooks, playing in the woods, swaying in the crowd of a local show, knitting scarves as a newly released albums spins, relishing the simple pleasures of catching the train on-time, telling and listening to stories, stoking campfires and seizing any opportunity that encourages me to learn about unfamiliar people, ideas and places.

Education: Central Connecticut State University; B.S. English Seconday Education; Minor in Poetry
