The Ultimate Teen Adventure Guide to Iceland

Ever wondered what it would be like to set foot in the land of fire and ice? If you’re a teen looking for travel inspiration or a family member curious to learn more about one of our most epic international adventures, this travel guide is for you. Read on to discover why we love Iceland so much as an ultimate teen adventure destination.

Land of the Elements

Iceland is one of the only places on earth where you can hike through volcanic vistas, soak in mineral hot springs, and paddle in the serenity of glacial fjords all in one day. The geology of Iceland is dictated by elemental forces. This creates some of the most breathtaking landmarks in Europe. The effects of geothermal and tectonic power are visible everywhere you go, from giant fissures to towering waterfalls. A trip to Iceland is a visual education on the ability of volcanism and glaciation to transform a landscape. Þingvellir National Park, stop number one on our Iceland: Fire and Ice  summer teen adventure, is one of the best places to appreciate Iceland’s geological diversity. The park is located along the Mid-Atlantic ridge, a tectonic plate boundary. Huge cracks in the earth create gorges and canyons, including the famous Silfra Fissure. Silfra is filled with crystal clear water and an epic attraction for snorkelers and divers wanting to explore its azure depths. On our summer adventure, this legendary park will be where we embark on a day of white water rafting. If getting on the water is a highlight for you, don’t miss sea kayaking on Jökulsárlón. Paddlers will enjoy this glacier fed lagoon, full of prismatic icebergs floating on jewel-toned water. Ringed by a volcanic black sand beach, there’s no better way to illustrate the juxtaposition of fire and ice than this epic Icelandic lake.

No matter what the objective, kindness wins

Magic, Myth, and the Hidden People

If mythology is your cup of tea, Iceland boasts an incredibly rich and vibrant tradition of folklore that is sure to delight your imagination. Norse and Viking settlers brought their stories from Scandinavia when they came to Iceland in the late 9th century. Mythology and magic play a large role in Icelandic culture and daily living. One of the most prominent Icelandic belief revolves around the hidden people, or huldufólk. These supernatural beings are believed to reside in rocky outcroppings and mountainous areas. They are described as elves and lead secret lives, choosing to remain invisible most of the time. Although they can possess many wonderful gifts and knowledge, it’s not advised to seek them out. They don’t like to be bothered by humans and are known to enact revenge on those that disturb them. Respect for the hidden people is demonstrated by Icelandic construction practices that avoid sacred areas believed to be inhabited by them. Keep an eye out for roads that go around certain stones or houses that are built just to the side of rocky areas. These are likely the homes of huldufólk!

Into a Volcanic Wilderness

One of the best ways to experience Iceland’s ecosystems is to embark on the Laugavegar Trail of the Nordic highlands. This 4-day backpacking route takes you through fields of black lava rock, past otherworldly ice caves, and into lush glacier-carved valleys. The trail is dotted with roaring waterfalls and flanked by hills of sparkling obsidian. Although popular, the Laugavegar is no walk in the park. The trail crosses numerous glacially fed streams and ash fields subject to strong, cold winds. Hikers often encounter snow at higher elevations, even in the summertime. This backpack is for those ready for a bold challenge–and an unforgettable experience for those willing to test their limits. After four days of sore legs and breathtaking views, our Iceland Adventure itinerary caps off the experience is with a dip in the Blue Lagoon–Iceland’s most famous geothermal spa. Located in a lava field, the Blue Lagoon is a man made pool of rich, mineral infused waters. Silica in the water makes the pool a stunning light blue and forms light-colored mud. Enjoy a mud facial, the perfect thing to  unwind after long days on the trail. Nothing makes the feeling of relaxation better than having earned it out in the wild!

Experience-based judgement is what keeps us safe

The Norse Diet

No teen travel guide would be complete without mentioning the best things to eat on your summer adventure in Iceland. The cuisine of the country is largely shaped by the lack of agricultural history. Traditionally, Icelanders relied on hunting, fishing, raising livestock, and producing dairy. Fresh produce was imported from other places in Europe and supplemented the hardier staples, better adapted to the frozen and fiery land. Being an island nation, Icelandic food centers heavily around the sea. Fish is a popular main dish for many locals, especially Atlantic cod and haddock. One favorite preparation is plokkfiskur, a creamy fish stew with potatoes, best served with a hearty slice of rye bread slathered in freshly churned butter. Another must try is saltfiskur, a deliciously salt preserved fish that can be pan fried or baked with butter to make for a crispy treat. There’s one Icelandic staple that many might be familiar with, even in the aisles of your home grocery store. Skyr, creamy Icelandic yogurt, has made itself known around the world with its rich taste and high protein content. The intensively strained yogurt now comes in many flavors, like coffee, strawberry, and vanilla. You’ll want to try fresh original skyr from one of the local dairies to appreciate the flavor Icelanders have been enjoying for over a thousand years.

And then it rained…

Well, I’m not sure if it actually did. But unless you’re on our Grand Canyon trip, it’s bound to rain at least once, right? This may sound odd, but we really like a day of rain on our trips. It doesn’t have to rain – maybe it’s wind or mud.
