Tyson is joining Bold Earth for his 18th year as a trip leader. Born in the west, Tyson has a long-standing passion for the outdoors, and has a bachelor’s degree in outdoor leadership from Utah Valley University. He has worked in Hawaii in an after-school program; at his alma mater as an outdoor recreation leader; in Alaska with a glacier guiding company; in California as a snowboard instructor, and in South Korea for an international school. Also outside of Bold Earth, he has managed surf shops, helped build ropes courses from the ground up, and now helps run climbing gyms in Salt Lake. The through line is the same: getting people outside, into challenge, and into community. He believes deeply in what nature does for our physical and mental health and the way it reconnects us to ourselves, and the people around us. Tyson’s Bold Earth tenure has led him to Colorado, Utah, Arizona, California, Alaska, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Thailand, Africa, Australia, Ecuador, and Costa Rica.

What drew you to the Bold Earth community?

Bold Earth creates the conditions for the kind of trips that shift how we see the world and ourselves in a positive way. I keep coming back for the perspective these experiences give everyone involved — students, leaders, and the community around them. Getting to help facilitate lifetime memories, year after year, is a privilege I don’t take for granted.

 

What is your Bold Earth superpower?

My superpower is the balance between play and presence. I love to goof around and keep things light, but I can flip the switch the moment a group needs structure or a real conversation.

 

What is your adventure must-have?

A loaded playlist and a portable speaker, a beat-up journal for the moments worth remembering, and a deck of cards for instant friends in any time zone.
