Kilimanjaro: Tanzania

Safari, stand-up paddleboarding, hiking, snorkeling, community service

Mount Kilimanjaro trekking, safari, snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, community service, waterfall hiking

The highest mountain in Africa awaits your exploration. Spend over a week trekking to the summit of the 19,341-foot Mt. Kilimanjaro, a dormant volcano that sits in the northeast of Kilimanjaro: Tanzania. You’ll also see why the Serengeti is known as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa as you take a safari through its diverse habitats. Dozens of large mammals live here, so it’s likely you’ll get to see wildebeests, giraffes, hyenas, leopards, lions, and more! Snorkel in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, and relax on the beaches near Zanzibar. We’ll also spend time working in schools with local youth organizations.

Help restore native plants and swim at Materuni Waterfall

Swim beneath waterfalls and give back to local schools. Our journey begins in Materuni a lush village on the southern edge of Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. We’ll hike to the stunning 260-foot Materuni Waterfall and cool off in its natural swimming hole before spending a meaningful day giving back to the local community. Projects may include helping at a nearby school, participating in English exchanges, or assisting with renovations—all while connecting with local students and families.

TREK

MOUNT KILIMANJARO

Summit Africa's highest peak on a 9-day trek

Summit Africa’s highest peak on a 9-day Kilimanjaro trek. Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime as we embark on a multi-day trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro—one of the famed Seven Summits and Africa’s tallest peak at 19,341 feet. Our gradual route allows time to acclimate and fully appreciate the changing landscapes, from lush rainforest filled with wildlife to alpine deserts and glaciers. On summit day, we’ll reach Uhuru Peak (“freedom” in Swahili), taking in breathtaking sunrise views from the roof of Africa before descending to celebrate our accomplishment.

SERVICE

MATERUNI

Complete community service projects in local schools

Return to Materuni for reflection and deeper cultural connection. After returning from the mountain we’ll spend another day contributing to local projects and reconnecting with our friends in Materuni. This experience gives us a chance to reflect on our journey, deepen our understanding of Kilimanjaro: Tanzanian culture, and appreciate the hospitality of the communities that welcomed us.

SAFARI

SERENGETI

Spot lions, elephants, and witness the great migration

Safari the Serengeti and witness Africa’s legendary wildlife migration. We’ll travel west to the legendary Tarangire National Park, one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife reserves. Known as the “endless plains,” this UNESCO World Heritage Site teems with life—from herds of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles to lions, cheetahs, and elephants. On safari drives through the park, we’ll witness the incredible diversity of animals that call the Serengeti home and experience Africa’s wilderness up close.

PANGANI BEACH

ADVENTURE

Snorkel coral reefs and explore mangrove ecosystems

To wrap up our journey, we’ll unwind on the tranquil shores of Pangani, a serene coastal town on the Indian Ocean. Beneath the surface, these protected waters teem with over 425 species of fish, 35 types of coral, and vibrant sea life including the island’s endemic shrimp species. We’ll snorkel among the reefs where endangered green sea turtles still swim, then move through winding mangrove channels to learn about these vital coastal ecosystems. We’ll end our trip celebrating our unforgettable time together in Tanzania.

FAQS

Find answers to your questions about our adventure programs and get ready for an amazing experience!

What's the physical fitness requirement?

This trip requires students to be physically fit, as you’ll be tackling physically strenuous days hiking 5–12 miles with several thousand feet of steep elevation gain and loss. We recommend regular aerobic exercise for at least 6 weeks before your trip to get the most out of your Bold Earth experience. Walking, jogging, swimming, or riding a bike are all great ways to prepare for your summer adventure! You don’t need to be an elite athlete, but serious preparation is key:

  • Train with your gear: Hike on local trails wearing your fully packed 30–40L backpack to get used to the weight.
  • Break in your boots: Walk at least 20 miles in your hiking shoes before the trip to prevent blisters.
  • Build core strength: Practice balance and stabilization exercises (like planks or yoga) to handle variable, rugged terrain safely.

All technical equipment is provided. You’ll find a complete packing list specific to this adventure in your enrollment materials.

The climate will vary from the base of the mountain, the summit of the mountain, and your time on safari. At the base, you can expect temperatures around 70-80°F. Temperatures towards the summit of the mountain will average around 20-30°F. Temperatures will range from 70°F to 100°F on safari and by the ocean. While some areas are normally dry, we may have afternoon showers in others.

Specific arrival and departure airports and time windows for this trip are listed in the trip details above. Students will need to arrive and depart within these designated windows on the first and last days of their adventure.

Our trip leaders will be awaiting each student’s arrival at the airport. As per international unaccompanied minor policy, a representative will bring each UM student to meet trip leaders directly outside of security. For all other, non-UM students, please follow your group off the plane down to baggage claim. Once bags have been picked up, students will exit security to meet trip leaders waiting directly on the other side. Students will call home as soon as they meet with our group.

Once your child is officially enrolled, we’ll send you detailed travel guidelines with specific arrival and departure information in a timely manner to ensure you have adequate time to plan and book your flights.

Please do not book flights until your child has been officially accepted and enrolled on their Kilimanjaro: Tanzania trip and you’ve received the detailed travel guidelines.
