July 3-4: The Longest, Most Rewarding Days

07 Jul, 2019

July 3 update by Marcus: We woke up to the sound of raindrops on our tent, and we dreaded taking them down and packing up. But we got through the weather challenges and after an average morning routine set off into the misty, foggy tundra for an 11-mile hike. We spent the day singing countless Taylor Swift songs thanks to Ilaria, Addy, Nial, and Adam, and playing many trail games. Erica took scenic pictures and photos for us right before heading off to a hilltop lunch with an incredible view.

After pita pizzas and peppers we set off again to another distant hut where we took a break and Sarah bought hot chocolate for the crew at a tiny mountain restaurant. We ate some snacks including the digestive biscuits that Will and Marcus got everyone hooked on.

The final stretch was upon us and after Will, Marcus, and Nial sang some Rex Orange County for Deba, Jack came through clutch with a Bluetooth speaker playing the group’s fantastic playlist of favorite songs until we got to the campsite. At this point people knew that they didn’t have to cross any more rivers or suffer through the elements. We quickly ate dinner and fell asleep.

July 4 update by Nicole: After a great night with Erika sleep-talking, we woke up later this morning. Naia and Adam made eggs with chips. Very healthy. Some of us finally pooped. Most of us didn’t. Deba and I ate oranges. With our packs packed, we started for an easier day. Only seven miles, and flat! Addy and Ilaria led many songs that everyone sang. Marcus and Nial loved the peanut butter and jelly wraps for lunch. Will took a risk and touched a spider. Then we walked in silent reflection. After, Maria and Elena danced at our dance party, and there was a rainbow. Then we played music. Time for our fourth night without showering!
