Leadership, adventure, and friendship are the goals of our three days of hiking in Colorado's amazing Rocky Mountain National Park. Rugged peaks and high-country meadows provide a pristine backdrop as we learn backcountry skills, get to know each other and embrace the spirit of the West! Bold Earth's Colorado Bold is the premier Colorado adventure!

After getting off the river and freshening up we prepare for the world famous Arches National park. At Arches, we will hike around dreamlike sandstone formations, and discover a landscape of contrasting colors, landforms and textures unlike any other in the world. The park has over 2,000 natural stone arches in addition to hundreds of soaring pinnacles, massive fins, and giant balanced rocks. To cap it off we will hike up to the famous Delicate Arch for sunset!

In Buena Vista we spend two days rock climbing and rafting down some of Central Colorado's best rivers. All Bold Earth trips give back to the beautiful places that we visit. On Colorado Bold we partner with the Colorado Fourteener Initiative to restore the trails on a 14,000 foot peak.

Next is an exciting two-day mountain bike trip in Colorado's majestic Western Slope, where local guides show us the secrets of mountain biking atop the Grand Mesa. This supported mountain bike adventure is exclusive to Bold Earth! For 25 years, we have owned a Special Use Permit in this protected area, allowing us unparalleled access to a myriad of shimmering lakes and world-class trails! This is not your average mountain biking trip - this is way more fun!

We push west from Colorado into the desert of Utah, where Westwater and Horsethief Canyons stun the senses with a mix of red rock and endless blue skies. Our three-day rafting trip down the Colorado River provides an amazing perspective of the magnificent sandstone formations near Moab. On the first two days of the trip, we paddle down flatwater while enjoying water fights, archaeological ruins, and constant swims. Day three brings us down the whitewater rapids of Westwater Canyon!

Day 1
Welcome to Bold Earth
Campers will be met upon arrival at the Denver International Airport. Campers are required to call home upon meeting their Trip Leaders! Once all campers have arrived, we load up our 15-passenger van and head to our campground west of Boulder, Colorado. At our campsite, we set up tents and have a group orientation and play games. We also go on a short hike to see the sunset over the mountains of Colorado. The leaders cook dinner and we get some time to play games and relax. During our orientation meeting, we discuss expectations, prepare for our upcoming journey, and get to know each other.
Day 2-4
Backpacking the Rocky Mountains
We waste no time getting the adventure started as we set into the Rocky Mountains for three days of backpacking. The Colorado wilderness boasts formidable topography that keeps the area wild and pristine. Knife-edge ridges, sparkling lakes, remote valleys, sprawling hardwood forests, snow-capped peaks and breathtaking alpine panoramas all contribute to the area's natural magnificence and a genuine sense of solitude. The views of the mountain wonderland are astounding as we ascend to a high-country basin before camping out under the stars. Day three brings us back to the trailhead and then into Rocky Mountain National Park, where we follow the completion of our awesome backpack with hot showers, laundry, and a celebratory dinner.
Day 5-7
Whitewater Rafting the Colorado River
We get an early start as we prepare for our rafting adventure! After a good breakfast, we break down camp and pile into our van for the drive to Grand Junction. Our surroundings change from cool Rocky Mountain peaks to the sun-drenched sandstone of Western Colorado's Grand Valley as we reach our put-in at Loma Colorado. Experienced whitewater guides from Sheri Griffith River Expeditions, who Bold Earth has worked with for 25 years, get us outfitted before we hit the water. Our first two days begin in red rock canyons on the steadily flowing Colorado River before the pace picks up and we hit whitewater in Westwater Canyon. While navigating class III-IV rapids, we roll through gut-wrenching drops and powerful eddies in our 18-foot oar boats and paddle rafts. At night, our river guides prepare gourmet meals before we fall asleep under the stars on red beaches. Our trip ends as we cross the border into Utah and take out in the adventure Mecca of Moab!
Day 8
Explore Moab and Arches National Park
After one week of non-stop adventure, we find time to clean up in Moab while enjoying the spectacular sandstone formations. In the morning, we'll restock in town before exploring the legendary Arches National Park. Our campsite in the park's stunning Devil's Garden campground gives us easy access to landmark features like Courthouse Towers, Balanced Rock, and Skyline Arch. A sunset hike to Delicate Arch, which famously graces the Utah license plate, caps off our day exploring this desert wonderland.
Day 9-11
Mountain Biking the Grand Mesa!
We then get ready to head north to Fruita, a classic Colorado town and the base for our mountain biking expedition. After meeting our Bold Earth biking guide, we get outfitted with bikes and helmets before ascending to the top of Grand Mesa. Thought to be the largest flat-topped landmass in the world, Grand Mesa is home to a unique high-desert environment dotted by over 300 lakes and a seemingly inexhaustible network of trails. Operating under a long-standing special-use permit which grants us land access unmatched by other commercial outfitters, we rip through the twisting singletrack, fire roads and slickrock trails that have built this area's reputation as a world-class fat-tire playground. All participants succeed because we design the rides to meet all ability levels. Our personal guide provides expert instruction and a support vehicle to carry supplies. On the afternoon of our third day of biking, we head to Aspen and set up our final camp at the Rock Bottom Ranch.
Day 12-13
Giving Back at the Rock Bottom Ranch
The next day we lend a helping hand and learn about the organic, sustainable ranch. Rock Bottom Ranch is set in the beautiful Rocky Mountains, and it is the perfect place to give back, relax and reflect on our awesome adventure together. We plant fresh vegetables and, in return, cook with the food the farm produces. An employee of the ranch gives us the grand tour of all the animals on the property, and we get to play with some of them too. After taking time to clean all group and personal gear, we head into town to celebrate a summer of challenge, success, and friendship in Colorado and Utah!
Day 14
Fly Home from Denver
All good things must come to an end. We drive to the airport bright and early, say goodbye and begin planning our adventures with Bold Earth for next summer!

Tell Me More About Colorado!

Colorado is home to Bold Earth. Bold Earth was spawned out of our passion for adventure, a passion that developed right here in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. We are the locals, we are the experts and we will be your guide to our amazing state.

Colorado is noted for its dynamic landscape of mountains, forests, high plains, mesas, canyons, plateaus, rivers, desert lands, perfect weather and, on a good year, the Denver Broncos. The state was named after the Colorado River, which Spanish explorers named the Río Colorado for the ruddy silt the river carried from the mountains. Bordered by seven states, Colorado is in the middle of all the action. Tourism and recreation make up a majority of Colorado’s economy – oil, mining, and agriculture make up other components.

Colorado was originally inhabited by Native Americans for more than 13,000 years. The eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains was a major migration route that was important to the spread of early peoples throughout the Americas. The Ancient Pueblo Peoples lived in the valleys and mesas of the Colorado Plateau. The Ute Native American Nation inhabited the mountain valleys of the Southern Rocky Mountains and the Western Rocky Mountains, even as far east as the Front Range (Denver) of the present day. The Apache and the Comanche inhabited the Eastern and Southeastern portions of the state as well. The Arapaho Nation and the Cheyenne Nation moved west to hunt across the High Plains at times as well.

More recent Colorado history grew out of the Gold Rush of the mid-1800s. An estimated 100,000 gold seekers flocked to the region during the 1850s, populating much of the state and developing most of Colorado’s infrastructure. Farming and other agricultural elements played into the design of current Colorado as well.

Colorado today is a blend of cultures and people. Because of its landscape, Colorado is widely known as being an adventure capitol, dedicated to recreation and outdoor adventures. Mountain biking, whitewater rafting, hiking and snow sports are incredibly popular and regularly practiced. Among the many activities, Colorado is famous for is its world-class ski resorts such as Vail and Aspen. If you cannot get enough of the mountains and the wilderness, Colorado is where you come to live and play.

Where Do We Stay?

In Colorado, we camp!

With 300 days of annual sunshine, summer is the perfect time to explore Colorado and Utah! Fresh air, shooting stars, incredible wilderness and great friends define the camping on Bike Hike Raft. Since 1976 Bold Earth has scouted the most incredible campsite you could imagine! Bold Earth provides tents. YES, they are comfortable and gender separated. Campers will share a tent with 2 or 3 other campers. This is a fun and special way of getting to know each other!

Bike Hike Raft will develop your sense of adventure and love of camping. Campers almost always have access to amenities (such as bathrooms) and shower every 2-3 days. We will stay in a combination of both wilderness and developed sites. Whether camping with the Rocky Mountains in view or along rivers and lakes, Bike Hike Raft enjoys the best camping, biggest views and sweetest adventures.

Why camping? Because we take you on an adventure which feels GREAT! You are probably not exactly sure about camping but what about:

Small group size = SUCCESS!

Especially on an outdoor adventure trip – group size is incredibly important. Bold Earth would not be permitted to visit the natural wonders we see with a bigger group. Consider yourself super lucky – only 13 campers at a time!

Bold Earth campers are leaders who seek independence, responsibility, and fun. We know teenagers and we understand that a small group size is ESSENTIAL to camper success – especially on Bike Hike Raft. Leadership is a planned part of every day. Everyone has a chance to be Leader of the Day (LOD) and will have the opportunity to step into a leadership role and help to run the trip! The challenges and rewards of Bike Hike Raft bring the unity and bonding of the group together.
