WASHINGTON: HIKE THE OLYMPIC PENINSULA & ROCK CLIMB
Our Pacific Northwest middle school camp begins among the soaring, moss-covered trees of the Olympic National Park. The trip’s first backpack spans 3 days and climbs from coastal forests to Lena Lake, where we camp in the shadow of twin peaks called The Brothers. The rain forests, beaches and mountains of the Olympics make the region one of the most unique on Earth, and the ideal setting to kick off our adventure! Our journey continues with 2 epic days of rock climbing in North Bend, where we rope up and tackle amazing climbs surrounded by beautiful wilderness.
KAYAK AND BIKE THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS
We take a ferry north to the famous San Juan Islands for four days of biking, sea kayaking and community service. While paddling through the Pacific, we keep our eyes open for sea lions, orca whales, bald eagles and porpoises. Our adventures take us from Lopez Island to Orcas Island, where we’ll camp near the shores of Moran Lake and work on a trail-building project with local park rangers. Bold Earth’s middle school travel camp is the perfect combination of adventure, leadership and community service.
BACKPACK THE EPIC CASCADE MOUNTAINS
Our last activity is in breathtaking Spider Meadow, where we’ll camp in a wildflower-dotted basin under the shadow of ice-capped peaks. This incredible backpack gives us the chance to practice all the wilderness skills we’ve learned over the previous three weeks, while savoring our last days together. A hike to the glacier above Spider Meadow offers amazing 360-degree views and serves as an epic finale to an amazing 3 weeks!

We understand campers may be new to camping. Bold Earth provides tents and campers bring their own sleeping bag and pad. Trip leaders help campers find their warm clothes and make sure each camper sleeps well! Campers will share a tent with 2 or 3 other campers of their same gender. This is a great way to get to know each other!

Group size is especially important on an introductory adventure trip. Bold Earth campers are leaders who seek independence, responsibility and fun.
Bonding and friendship are central to the success of Northwest Discovery. Bold Earth leaders are carefully trained in group dynamics and leadership. Also, Bold Earth leaders are the MOST FUN PEOPLE EVER! Your 2 Trip Leaders will take a hands on approach for the success of every individual. Bold Earth campers make friendships that last a lifetime.
Leadership is a planned part of every day. Our goal is for students to return home with a dozen new lifelong friends, more confident, more independent and appreciative of the world around them.
Yes! The MAJORITY of Bold Earth campers join alone – 85% to be exact. Coming alone allows campers the chance to truly grown and learn independence.
However, some students want to share this experience with their best friend, which is fine. Bold Earth will allow up to 3 people that know each other in one group.
Community Service is a Bold Earth core value. Bold Earth carefully chooses hands on community service projects that are active, engaging and . . . LIFE CHANGING! All Bold Earth participants will receive a certificate to document their service hours.

Project: We camp and volunteer for a day in Moran State Park on Orcas Island in Washington state. With five freshwater lakes and more than 30 miles of hiking trails, the park needs our help protecting fragile plant and wildlife habitats and restoring impacted areas. Rangers will provide the knowledge and tools we need to help preserve wilderness characteristics on the island. Past projects have included the construction of foot bridges throughout the park and invasive species removal. For more information visit the Moran State Park.

Checking Bags? On airport day, campers will check the large duffle bag and backpacking backpack. We recommend using the small daypack as a carry-on. Campers should either bring a credit card or enough cash to check their bags home.
Give Bold Earth a call at 303-526-0806 if you have any questions. The Bold Earth Trip Advisor Team is always available to help answer packing questions or provide gear recommendations.
We will be traveling by 15 passenger vans, with a roof-rack for all of our personal gear. The van will be driven by your experienced and carefully screened leaders.
All travel is carefully planned to minimize time spent in the van and maximize the trip experience for active adventure. YES, we stop frequently to throw a frisbee and for bathroom breaks – DUH!
Most of the trip occurs in Washington State. Washington is in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States located north of Oregon, west of Idaho, and south of the Canada’s British Columbia. With 157 miles (253km) of coastline on the Puget Sound and the Pacific Ocean. Washington is beautiful!
Named after George Washington, the first President of the United States, over half of Washington’s residents live in the Seattle metropolitan area along the Puget Sound. The world-famous Puget Sounds is an inlet of the Pacific Ocean consisting of numerous islands, deep fjords and bays carved out by glaciers over many years. The rest of Washington is composed of temperate rain forests, mountain ranges and a semi-arid eastern basin.
Washington is a hub of innovation, enterprise and business. Home to Boeing, Amazon, Microsoft and Starbucks, Washington is full of energy and creativity.
Any local would tell you, summer is perfect in the Pacific Northwest. Summers here are sunny, fairly dry and warm. Average daytime temperatures will be around 85°F (24°C) with some nights dropping to a pleasant 40°F (5°C).
BOLD EARTH BACKPACKING IS AWESOME!
There is no experience required for Bold Earht backpacking. Bold Earth designs hikes that go to beautiful places and are fun for everyone. Your leaders will teach you everything that you need to know about the backcountry. Bold Earth operates under a special use permit through the Wenatchee National Forest. This allows us to go to amazing places that others can’t.

Sydney had a wonderful experience and loved all the new friends she made and new things she experienced. Everything was wonderful and Sydney can't wait to do another trip. Wild Coast Discovery was a great experience for her and she loved every minute of it. Thank you for everything.

Cody learned a lot about himself on Wild Coast Discovery and was so proud of his accomplishments, his cooking and the independence. I was thrilled for him to experience outdoor activities. I couldn't be more impressed with the entire experience from the intimate, personalized phone attention, interviews and camper page to the warm, individualized, unhurried mid-trip phone calls and finally the "self-reported" achievements and successful feelings supported by the Bold Earth organization.
