Our Pacific Northwest middle school camp begins among the soaring, moss-covered trees of the Olympic National Park. The trip's first backpack spans 3 days and climbs from coastal forests to Lena Lake, where we camp in the shadow of twin peaks called The Brothers. The rain forests, beaches and mountains of the Olympics make the region one of the most unique on Earth, and the ideal setting to kick off our adventure! Our journey continues with 2 epic days of rock climbing in North Bend, where where we rope up and tackle amazing climbs surrounded by beautiful wilderness.
KAYAK AND BIKE THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS
We take a ferry north to the famous San Juan Islands for four days of biking, sea kayaking and community service. While paddling through the Pacific, we keep our eyes open for sea lions, orca whales, bald eagles and porpoises. Our adventures take us from Lopez Island to Orcas Island, where we’ll camp near the shores of Moran Lake and work on a trail-building project with local park rangers. Bold Earth's middle school travel camp is the perfect combination of adventure, leadership and community service.
BACKPACK THE EPIC CASCADE MOUNTAINS
Our last activity is in breathtaking Spider Meadow, where we’ll camp in a wildflower-dotted basin under the shadow of ice-capped peaks. This incredible backpack gives us the chance to practice all the wilderness skills we’ve learned over the previous three weeks, while savoring our last days together. A hike to the glacier above Spider Meadow offers amazing 360-degree views and serves as an epic finale to an amazing 3 weeks!

Buying Guide: The packing list above is mandatory for your trip; however, the linked items are just shopping recommendations. Backpacks, sleeping bags, and sleeping pads may also be purchased from an outdoor store that has tested gear for varied environments. More generic gear such as mess kits, duffel bags, etc. can be bought relatively inexpensive at Target, Walmart, etc. Feel free to find the gear that suits you and your budget best. The Bold Earth office welcomes and expects questions about packing and equipment!
Travel and Packing Tips: Don't worry about how your backpack is arranged right now. Once you arrive, your Trip Leaders will show you the most efficient way to pack your bag for a multi-day trip. If you have the space for it, a great idea for your airport and travel days is to pack your empty backpacking backpack into your duffel bag. This will reduce your checked bags from two to one.
Spending Money: Bring approximately $75 per week. For most campers this is more than enough. This is for personal expenses and gifts. Unless there is an emergency, Bold Earth will not advance money.
Identification: ID is required when checking in for flights. Bring along a picture ID, library card, school ID or state ID card. Your trip leader will be happy to hold any ID or important documents.
Helmets: Helmets are provided and required for rafting and ice climbing.
Laundry: We visit laundromats weekly. You will wash your own clothes, we provide the suds, coins and know-how. Many participants have identical jeans, socks, hiking boots, etc. A good practice is to put your name on items which are not unique to you.
Trip Journal: Bring along a notebook to record the challenges and successes of your adventure. Forest Service (“USFS”) and National Park Service (“NPS”): Bold Earth is required to notify all participants that, to the extent a court determines USFS and NPS restrictions on waivers of liability apply to Bold Earth as a matter of law, Bold Earth’s liability for negligence may not be waived while you are traveling on those affected lands.
Reading List: The people, places and activities you will encounter on your trip are diverse and incredible. These are a few books offering background information. We suggest you consider reading these books before, during or after your adventure. Also, you might like to read Outside Magazine, Backpacker Magazine, Climbing Magazine, Rock & Ice or Trilogy Magazine, available everywhere. Group size is especially important on an introductory adventure trip. Bold Earth campers are leaders who seek independence, responsibility and fun.

Also, Bold Earth leaders are the MOST FUN PEOPLE EVER! Your 2 Trip Leaders will take a hands on approach for the success of every individual. Bold Earth campers make friendships that last a lifetime.
Leadership is a planned part of every day. Our goal is for students to return home with a dozen new lifelong friends, more confident, more independent and appreciative of the world around them.
Yes! The MAJORITY of Bold Earth campers join alone – 85% to be exact. Coming alone allows campers the chance to truly grown and learn independence.
However, some students want to share this experience with their best friend, which is fine. Bold Earth will allow up to 3 people that know each other in one group.
Community Service is a Bold Earth core value. Bold Earth carefully chooses hands on community service projects that are active, engaging and . . . LIFE CHANGING! All Bold Earth participants will receive a certificate to document their service hours.

Project: We camp and volunteer for a day in Moran State Park on Orcas Island in Washington state. With five freshwater lakes and more than 30 miles of hiking trails, the park needs our help protecting fragile plant and wildlife habitats and restoring impacted areas. Rangers will provide the knowledge and tools we need to help preserve wilderness characteristics on the island. Past projects have included the construction of foot bridges throughout the park and invasive species removal. For more information visit the Moran State Park.

Most of the trip occurs in Washington State. Washington is in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States located north of Oregon, west of Idaho, and south of the Canada’s British Columbia. With 157 miles (253km) of coastline on the Puget Sound and the Pacific Ocean. Washington is beautiful!
Named after George Washington, the first President of the United States, over half of Washington’s residents live in the Seattle metropolitan area along the Puget Sound. The world-famous Puget Sounds is an inlet of the Pacific Ocean consisting of numerous islands, deep fjords and bays carved out by glaciers over many years. The rest of Washington is composed of temperate rain forests, mountain ranges and a semi-arid eastern basin.
Washington is a hub of innovation, enterprise and business. Home to Boeing, Amazon, Microsoft and Starbucks – Washington is full of energy and beauty.
Any local would tell you, summer is perfect in the Pacific Northwest. Summers here are sunny, fairly dry and warm. Average daytime temperatures will be around 85°F (24°C) with some nights dropping to a pleasant 40°F (5°C).

AWESOME LEARNING EXPERIENCE!
I really enjoyed my experience on Wild Coast Discovery so I just wanted to say thank you. Bold Earth did a very nice job with communication with everyone, which made the transition so much easier. All in all it was one of the most fun learning experiences I will probably every have.
PARENTS, Heidi & Brad: Incredibly pleased with the Bold Earth Wild Coast Discovery program. Great opportunity for young people and the communication with the organization was excellent. The leaders were caring, considerate and helped Cora to push beyond challenges. Communication and feedback was excellent.
PARENTS, Susan & Mark: Loren had the "best time ever" on his Wild Coast Discovery trip this summer and is already planning for next summer :)
BEST THREE WEEKS!
Wild Coast Discovery was by far the best three weeks that I’ve ever had!
PARENTS, Suyanti & Leonard: Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the Wild Coast Discovery program and I believe that Andrew will remember his experience for the rest of his life. According to Andrew, the leaders were very great.
PARENTS, Lori & Bob: Sydney had a wonderful experience and loved all the new friends she made and new things she experienced. Everything was wonderful and Sydney can't wait to do another trip. Wild Coast Discovery was a great experience for her and she loved every minute of it. Thank you for everything.
Bold Earth is an awesome company that makes awesome trips in awesome places where you make awesome friends! Awesome, right? Wild Coast Discovery is great. One of my best summers in my life. We immediately become close to our friends and we are sad when we leave them. But when we leave them, we also have a smile on our face, because we think of all the memories that you made during the trip. Thank you Bold Earth.
PARENTS, Veronique & Vincent: Once again the summer with Bold Earth has been great and full of wonderful memories. We always loved all the Bold Earth leaders for their enthusiasm, their proximity with the campers, their safety awareness, their ability to make our kids nature conscious and able to challenge themselves. They are excellent!
I DIDN'T WANT TO COME HOME!
Wild Coast Discovery was the best summer ever. Everything was so amazing, the activities, the leaders and our group. We all grew into a big family and I didn’t want to leave my new friends. Thank you so much for a wonderful summer!
PARENTS, Lisa & Fady: The best news to me was when Laura came back from Wild Coast Discovery and said she had the best time of her life...what more can I say? For any parent who sends their kids on such a trip this is what they want to hear. I am so happy for Laura that she was able to experience such an adventure and I am thankful to you all at Bold Earth for making it happen.
PARENTS, Dana & Kip: Cody learned a lot about himself on Wild Coast Discovery and was so proud of his accomplishments, his cooking and the independence. I was thrilled for him to experience outdoor activities. I couldn't be more impressed with the entire experience from the intimate, personalized phone attention, interviews and camper page to the warm, individualized, unhurried mid-trip phone calls and finally the "self-reported" achievements and successful feelings supported by the Bold Earth organization.
BEST SUMMER EVER!
I had the best summer ever and will never forget Wild Coast Discovery!!!
PARENTS, Stacy & Neil: Abby loved Bold Earth!! She loves the trip leaders, she loves the other kids and the adventure. She always comes home proud! Abby loved all three of her trip leaders. She said that they each made the adventure totally awesome in each of their own ways!
PARENTS, Fran & Andrew: We loved the Wild Coast Discovery trip! He had a great time. Jacob had no complaints, which is unusual for him, so I know he really loved it. We enjoyed the blog! My conversations with the trip leaders were all very helpful and informative. They were great.
Last year I went to England and France with another company and Wild Coast Discovery was WAY better!
PARENTS, Lisa & Scott: I looked forward to reading the blogs. The blog pictures showed all the kids and I felt I could see each kid’s great adventure. The scenery was spectacular. Ricky had a great trip and when I spoke to his leaders, they had Ricky's best interest in mind.
DEFINITELY COMING BACK!
I really enjoyed my Wild Coast Discovery experience at Bold Earth this year. I will definitely come back next year.
PARENTS, Valerie & Jeffrey: Charles had an awesome experience on Wild Coast Discovery and is excited about future expeditions. The three trip leaders seemed terrific and Charles had nothing but wonderful things to say about all of them when he came home.
PARENTS, Joanie & Piero: We were both thrilled with Juliana's Wild Coast Discovery adventure with Bold Earth. We absolutely loved the blogs that gave us the much appreciated information on what they were all up to. It certainly made us feel connected even when we were not speaking. And the phone calls helped too. A little connection with them goes a long way to make us feel that our kids are safe. Juliana loved her counselors. She said they were outgoing and funny. She is definitely interested in returning next year! Thanks everyone for making the trip one that Juliana refers to as the best experience of her life!
PARENTS, Robin & Arrien: Kelsey made such wonderful friends on her Wild Coast Discovery trip and she has already asked if we can go to California on spring break to visit some of them. The best thing we noticed after Kelsey got home was that her confidence went way up. We have been telling her for years how strong she is and she never believed us. When she returned she told us that the rock climbing made her realize that she is far more capable of physical challenges than she ever thought before. She always beat all the boys in the group (except one) in their swimming contests. Again, having the realization that she may be small, but she is strong. She is now at her new high school and playing on the field hockey team and enjoying a new sport.
PARENTS, Emily & Stefan: Jean-Paul loved his 3 weeks with Bold Earth. He learned a lot about living and camping in a team group and would love to do a Bold Earth trip another summer.
Being my first time going to Bold Earth, Wild Coast Discovery was really awesome because I had so much fun and I made a lot of really good friends that I'm still in touch with now. Veronica and Susie made it really easy for me to become friends with everyone when I was shy. I'm already thinking about which Bold Earth trip I'm going to go on next summer. I can't wait!
My Bold Earth Wild Coast Discovery trip was outstanding! While I was nervous leading up to it, my nerves were harbored within a few hours. The counselors did a superb job of making us feel at home and livening up things with fun games! The surprises were especially awesome! I liked every activity, and really had a fun time skiing and backpacking. Thanks for a great summer, and I hope to return next year!
PARENTS, Cary & Lewis: Luke had a fantastic three weeks with Bold Earth!! Thanks! He really enjoyed the leadership and friendship provided by his counselors-- Veronica, Kalen and Susie. The blog was a fantastic method in which to keep track of his great adventure and allowed us to have meaningful and fun conversations upon Luke's return home. The diverse/international group of campers added to his experience.
