Ultimate Spain begins in Spain's Capital, Madrid. An incredible cultural city with wide boulevards, we spend our first two days exploring Madrid's incredible food, art, and culture. Eating tapas, paella and visiting the Prado Museum. The Bold Earth walking tour of Madrid shows participants the hidden lanes and majestic parks that have impressed so many. The mix of outdoor adventure, authentic host families, and Spanish classes make Bold Earth's Spain teen trip a carefully crafted teen Spain program.

Next, we start a journey on a path with over 1000 years of history. The Camino de Santiago means something different to everyone; a way to unplug from modern society, a spiritual journey, or a fun and challenging way to see beautiful countryside with new friends. For six days we will wind through authentic medieval towns on our way to Santiago de Compostela, where we receive a "Compostela" at the finish to prove our accomplishment.

After finishing the Camino de Santiago, we travel to the Mediterranean Coast to Sitges, our home for Spanish language school. A very small beach town, Sitges' cobblestone streets, and beach-front location make it an ideal town for homestays. At night, participants stay two-per family in centrally-located houses, near to the leaders and other students. All families have been carefully selected and are connected to Bold Earth through long-term relationships. Once at school, students are divided by ability level and experience, then meet with Spanish teachers who encourage conversation and real-life practice. Morning classes are supplemented with afternoon excursions; community service, culture, and adventure are the themes. Students love Spanish classes as part of Bold Earth's Spain teen trip.

During our Spanish lessons, we will travel to Barcelona, a vibrant city located on the beaches of the Mediterranean Sea. We spend time visiting the city’s major sites, including Gaudí’s Park Güell and La Sagrada Familia as well as the stadium of Barcelona FC. For a fresh perspective on this vibrant metropolis, we tour the famous architecture, visit beautiful beaches and savor panoramas of the Barcelona skyline, all while swimming, laughing and enjoying the warm waters of the Mediterranean! Lastly, we spend the last day celebrating an amazing two weeks in Spain with a Paella feast!

Day 1-2
Welcome to Bold Earth's Ultimate Spain! You will be met upon arrival at the Madrid Airport by your experienced Bold Earth leaders. All campers are required to call home upon arrival. Once the group has arrived, we do some sightseeing in Madrid with our new friends. After lunch, we play name games in the park and get to know the members of our Bold Earth group. The next day, we visit Madrid's incredible boulevards, parks, and museums before traveling to Lugo. Highlights include a day-long walking tour through side-streets and markets. We also visit what is perhaps Spain's most famous museum, Prado Museum.
Day 3-6
Camino de Santiago Start
Our Camino de Santiago journey begins in the medieval city of Lugo where we meet our local guide. The only city in the world to be completely surrounded by ancient Roman walls, Lugo is the perfect place to set the tone for our journey West on the Camino de Santiago. Our first four days on the Camino take us through amazing villages on our way to Arzúa, where we will meet locals and walk through the lush green valleys of Galicia.
Day 7-9
Camino de Santiago Finish
The culmination of our 100km hike from Lugo to Santiago de Compostela! Here the Camino walk will pass through pretty woods, sleepy villages and across streams most of the days. We take a day to relax, clean up and enjoy the beautiful town of Santiago de Compostela. Here we will say goodbye to our local guide and prepare to head to Stiges to begin our language portion of the trip.
Day 10-13
Sitges: Spanish School
Our next three days are an incredible immersion into Spanish language and Spain's culture. Eating home cooked meals, going to Spanish class and experiencing the best of Sitges, many say these are the three best days of Ultimate Spain. Participants are with their host family from 6 PM - 8 AM and then have Spanish school from 9 AM to 1 PM. Our group has lunch together and then spends the time from 1 PM to 6 PM on activities. Activities include a beach clean-up community service project, hiking along a coastal trail, cultural visits and more. During the afternoons we travel by private van into the center of Barcelona! We have two days to experience Barcelona! We visit Las Ramblas, a Gaudí home, and La Sagrada Familia. Depending on group interest, the later afternoon is spent either at the Parc Güel or visiting Camp Nou, home of Barcelona F.C.
Day 14
Adiós España!
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end... We travel to Madrid's Airport in the morning to say our goodbyes after a summer of unforgettable travel in Spain! Outdoor adventure, new friends, and fun. Gracias and adios!

Study Spanish during the Summer?

OF COURSE! Ultimate Spain is not your typical blah, blah, blah, Spanish program. BORING! Students who join Ultimate Spain want to improve their Spanish language skill and have fun. While it is all fun and games, you will also learn a TON and improve your language skills tremendously. The Spanish language portion of Bold Earth’s Spain Adventure program consists of two components:

1. Spanish IMMERSION: Living with a family in Sitges, Spain allows participants to learn Spanish. Spanish study without a homestay allows students to speak too much English! Bold Earth makes the Spanish language a FUN priority. Examples include ordering for the group at a restaurant, a scavenger hunt, seeing a movie, playing soccer with local youth, the options are unlimited, fun and highly organized!

2. Language Classes: Four of your fourteen days will include language class for 4 hours in the morning. The goal of these four days is fun and highly personalized language instruction. Small class sizes provide each student with the greatest level of interaction and personalized attention from the Spanish instructor. The language school portion of your trip allows you to learn in a super encouraging and fun environment. Our Spanish immersion school located in the center of Sitges is taught by fun, youthful and energetic Spanish teachers.

Families (and Spanish teachers back home) are AMAZED by your progress on Ultimate Spain. Students improve their comfort level in speaking and writing in Spanish. Students have a ton of fun and improve tremendously. BUT, your effort, readiness and jumping in without worry is required.

Bold Earth is clear that summer is a time to have fun in a completely new environment with friends for life. Yes, classes are graded but only for your feedback. Yes, there are homework assignments and workbooks but they are strictly for your advancement in Spanish. Most campers complete their homework with their family – LANGUAGE IMMERSION!

Is there adventure too?

YES – OF COURSE! Ultimate Spain is expertly planned to balance culture & language with adventure. WOW!

When not exploring the sights of famous Barcelona and Madrid, Bold Earth will take you up into the Pyrenees Mountains, the beaches of San Sebastian and the cobblestone streets of Sitges.

The blend of Spanish language, European culture and adventure will make this Bold Earth trip second to none! Summer doesn’t have to be only academic or only adventure – Bold Earth expertly combines both. Bold Earth promises a carefully crafted, high-quality and transformational summer that will meet or exceed your expectations.

Where do we stay?

Bold Earth spends countless hours securing incredible, perfect and amazing accommodations for Ultimate Spain. Summer is the busiest season in Spain – Bold Earth plans trips FAR in advance to ensure we have the BEST accommodations. YES, you will always be comfortable!

• Homestays: Living in Sitges is a dream and your four-night homestay will make your summer in Spain that much more enjoyable and authentic. All Bold Earth students are near to each other and the trip leaders. Close to everything, we are able to walk or together to the beach and to Spanish school. WOW! This is authentic – campers really get to know authentic Spanish culture!

• Hostels: Bold Earth carefully selects a hostel in Barcelona and Madrid for the beginning and end of the trip. Students always stay together in private rooms with bunk beds. Staying in hostels allows the group to stay in the center of the city and fully explore the sights!

• Casa Rural: Located in the Pyrenees Mountain town of Ainsa, this is our home base for hiking and exploring. Casa Rural is a small bed and breakfast hotel located outside of Ainsa. We are the only guests who stay in this family run B&B. Home cooked meals for breakfast and dinner are the highlights.

Ultimate Spain is carefully crafted. Where, how and why we pick every night’s lodging is why you select and put your trust in Bold Earth and we honor that trust.

Breakdown: • Homestays – 4 nights • Hostels/Hotels – 8 nights • Casa Rural – 2 nights

Homestay details?

Homestay families are caring, friendly and sweet! THOUSANDS of Bold Earth students have enjoyed and found the Ultimate Spain homestay to be a highlight. Host families are carefully screened and paid to host Bold Earth students. It is our job and responsibility to provide safe, safe and safe homestays!

Some Facts: • Two students per Family (of the same gender) • Homestays are upscale apartments in a beautiful Sitges neighborhood • YES, two students will share a private room • YES, bathrooms are lovely • All campers are in the same neighborhood • Trip leaders are ALWAYS very nearby • Campers are together as a group from 8 AM to 6 PM or later • Students are with host-family for dinner and sleeping.

Bold Earth students spend only a moderate amount of time with their host families. Most of the day (8 AM to 6 PM) is spent with the group. Every camper is visited at their homestay by your trip leader to ensure comfort. All families have telephones and our leaders always carry cell phones. If there is ever the slightest problem we immediately switch host families.

Most students find Bold Earth language trips to not only prepare them for High School Spanish but also to prepare them for college study abroad programs. WOW!

Thousands of students have successfully enjoyed homestays with Bold Earth. It is common to be nervous and we understand! Not convinced? Speak directly with Bold Earth Ultimate Spain Alumni. E-mail or call our office to immediately receive references.

Community Service?

Community Service is a Bold Earth core value. Bold Earth carefully chooses hands-on community service projects that are active, engaging and inspiring! All Bold Earth participants will receive a certificate to document their service hours.

Service Credit: 4 Hours

Environmental Clean-Up: Ultimate Spain is an action-packed, culturally rich trip – full of ESPAÑA! As a core value, every Bold Earth trip includes a service project. Taking a day-off from our adventures in the Pyrenees Mountains, Bold Earth Campers spend a 1/2 day cleaning trash from the side of a river. Unfortunately, trash from campsites, cars, and hikers end up on the riverside. Together, the group partners with a local conservation organization to pick up trash from the riverside. Speaking Spanish, enjoying the beautiful Pyrenees Mountains and making the area cleaner is a great part of Bold Earth’s Ultimate Spain trip. Bold Earth campers help restore the natural habitat for plants and animals.

What To Pack?

Over the last 20 years, Bold Earth has carefully crafted the Ultimate Spain Packing List to include everything a participant needs to be comfortable on the trip. Click to view: Ultimate Spain Packing List for a detailed description of exactly what to bring. Anything not included on the list is provided by Bold Earth.

Host Family Gift?

Yes, Bold Earth recommends bringing a small gift for your host family. We recommend a photo of your family or a sweet from your hometown. Simple is better!

Checking Bags? On Airport Day, campers will check the large duffle bag. We recommend using the small daypack as a carry-on. Most airlines do not charge a checked bag fee for international travel. We recommend asking the airline for their specific policy – campers are responsible for checked bag fees.

Give Bold Earth a call at 303-526-0806 if you have any questions. The Bold Earth Trip Advisor team is always available to help answer packing questions or provide gear recommendations.

Group size?

Small group size = SUCCESS!

We know teenagers and we understand that a small group size is ESSENTIAL to student success – especially while participating in a language/adventure program.

Who wants to travel with 40 other teens on a big bus??? Bonding and friendship are essential to the success of any summer program. Small groups allow students to SOAR! Bold Earth leaders are carefully trained in group dynamics and leadership.

Also, Bold Earth leaders are the MOST FUN PEOPLE EVER! Bold Earth students make friendships that last a lifetime.

You should want and expect knowledgeable and experienced guides to make the trip safer and 100% solid. That is Bold Earth.

Local European guides?

Yes! Bold Earth will be accompanied by local Spanish guides during the entirety of Ultimate Spain. In addition to your two US guides, we will have one Spanish guide with us in Sitges and another with us on our journey from Barcelona to Madrid.

People who know Europe know the difference. Interestingly, it is not unusual for one or two Europeans to join a Bold Earth European trip. We consider this the ultimate compliment.

How do we travel?

Ultimate Spain is divided into three different portions:

1. Barcelona/Sitges

2. Pyrenees Mountains/San Sebastian

3. Madrid.

In Barcelona, students (and ALWAYS trip leaders) travel together by metro. An AMAZING glimpse into the culture and daily life of Barcelona, students enjoy the subway and are always supervised.

In Sitges we WALK everywhere. It is a tiny little town.

The other portions of the trip, our group is transported by private van

All travel is carefully planned and coordinated to maximize activities & culture and minimize time spent traveling. All travel while on Spain Adventure is fully included. Please view Ultimate Spain Trip Blogs to get a better idea of travel and day to day activities.

What is the food like?

Bold Earth food is awesome! YES, the food will be healthy, delicious, local, and fun. Bold Earth emphasizes eating locally – this means learning to cook Spanish food – WOW!

Sitges: Students eat breakfast and dinner with their host families. Learning to cook and spending time with the family is a highlight! Lunch and a mid-afternoon snack are shared and prepared by the group. We also enjoy one night out at a restaurant in Barcelona!

Pyrenees: Home cooked Spanish food! Many teens find this to be the highlight of the trip! Students in cook teams, learn to plan, shop (at local grocery stores) and cook new meals and local dishes. We will enjoy one meal catered while in the Pyrenees. Most special diets, allergies, and food preferences can absolutely be accommodated.

Spanish cuisine is the classic Mediterranean diet – DELICIOUS FOOD! With very local, fresh and healthy foods, Spain has a variety of dishes that come from differences in geography, culture, and climate. Some examples of dishes include paella, tapas, empanada, and pisto. Each new dish will be a culinary adventure and an incredible way to experience the Spanish culture.

Do I need a passport?

Yes, for all non-Europeans, a valid passport is needed to enter Spain.
