Conversational skills and increased confidence are the goals as we attend classes at both Flamingo Beach and in Monteverde. Forget your typical Spanish class! Small classes of 4 participants are led by fun local instructors who help participants improve fluency in an authentic environment. Conversations are enhanced with culture, cooking, field trips and games. During the night, we stay with local host families to practice Spanish, eat home-cooked meals and get a firsthand taste of Costa Rican culture. We wrap up our amazing journey by saying "Pura Vida" to the pristine beaches and our wonderful host families of Bold Earth's Spanish immersion camp!
AMAZING BEACHES & RAINFOREST ADVENTURES
Our summer immersion program visits Monteverde Cloud Forest, perched high in the clouds amongst one of the most amazing wildlife sanctuaries in the world. Keep your eyes open for hummingbirds, toucans, sloths and monkeys. On our way from the jungle to the beach, we stop for our community service project with the Costa Rican Humanitarian Foundation. Partnering with local schools, we practice our Spanish while helping to build a new playground. Next, we travel to the Pacific Coast where we have a day of guided surf lessons, sail on the Marlin del Ray, a 66 foot catamaran, and soak up the sun and white sand of our new home: Flamingo Beach! The combination of summer immersion program and adventure activities make Costa Rica Immersion one of Bold Earth's most popular trips!

Buying Guide: The packing list above is mandatory for your trip; however, the linked items are just shopping recommendations. Backpacks, sleeping bags, and sleeping pads may also be purchased from an outdoor store that has tested gear for varied environments. More generic gear such as mess kits, duffel bags, etc. can be bought relatively inexpensive at Target, Walmart, etc. Feel free to find the gear that suits you and your budget best. The Bold Earth office welcomes and expects questions about packing and equipment!
Travel and Packing Tips: Don't worry about how your backpack is arranged right now. Once you arrive, your Trip Leaders will show you the most efficient way to pack your bag for a multi-day trip. If you have the space for it, a great idea for your airport and travel days is to pack your empty backpacking backpack into your duffel bag. This will reduce your checked bags from two to one.
Spending Money: Bring approximately $75 per week. For most campers this is more than enough. This is for personal expenses and gifts. Unless there is an emergency, Bold Earth will not advance money.
Identification: ID is required when checking in for flights. Bring along a picture ID, library card, school ID or state ID card. Your trip leader will be happy to hold any ID or important documents.
Helmets: Helmets are provided and required for rafting and ice climbing.
Laundry: We visit laundromats weekly. You will wash your own clothes, we provide the suds, coins and know-how. Many participants have identical jeans, socks, hiking boots, etc. A good practice is to put your name on items which are not unique to you.
Trip Journal: Bring along a notebook to record the challenges and successes of your adventure. Forest Service (“USFS”) and National Park Service (“NPS”): Bold Earth is required to notify all participants that, to the extent a court determines USFS and NPS restrictions on waivers of liability apply to Bold Earth as a matter of law, Bold Earth’s liability for negligence may not be waived while you are traveling on those affected lands.
Reading List: The people, places and activities you will encounter on your trip are diverse and incredible. These are a few books offering background information. We suggest you consider reading these books before, during or after your adventure. Also, you might like to read Outside Magazine, Backpacker Magazine, Climbing Magazine, Rock & Ice or Trilogy Magazine, available everywhere. WOW – If only normal Spanish class could be this fun! Check out a normal day in Costa Rica with Bold Earth:
Mornings: ADVENTURE or SERVICE
• Costa Rica is the adventure capital of the world! To not zip-line, hike, sail, snorkel and surf would be terrible! Every day, Costa Rica Spanish 14 skillfully combines language, adventure and service to provide an action-packed and fun learning experience for teenagers.
• 8 hours of community service allows campers to practice Spanish outside the classroom. Example: Along with local families, we’ll help to build a playground while using TONS of Spanish while you experience the warmth of Costa Rican locals.
Afternoons: SPANISH CLASS
• 4 campers – 1 teacher: Conversation is the GOAL but small group size allows Bold Earth to cater the class to your needs! Campers are divided into classes based on ability to make the most of your 10 days of language classes. Small class size, allows campers to talk a lot and receive high quality, personalized instruction. Families and Spanish teachers are AMAZED by camper progress on Costa Rica Spanish 14.
Evenings: HOMESTAY & GROUP
• Homestay = Language Immersion! Costa Rica Spanish is an immersion trip for campers looking to significantly improve their Spanish language abilities. Staying with a host family is the ideal opportunity to speak lots of Spanish with native Spanish speakers.
For over 20 years, Bold Earth has perfected Costa Rica trips for teenagers. Costa Rica is a safe, democratic and healthy country that is frequently noted as the adventure and language learning capital of Latin America. Each adventure activity is led by local professional guides including: zip-line, river tube, mountain bike, hot springs, waterfalls, sail and surf lessons. Our small groups ensure you will make lifelong friendships and improve your Spanish language abilities!
Students who join Costa Rica Spanish 14 want to improve their Spanish language skill and have fun. We find students who choose this trip are more serious about Spanish and are “into it”. The Spanish language portion of Bold Earth’s Costa Rica program consists of two components:
1. Spanish IMMERSION: Every day of the trip Bold Earth sets you up speak and live in Spanish. Each day Bold Earth makes Spanish language a FUN priority. Examples include shopping for lunch or breakfast in a local market, ordering for the group at a restaurant, a scavenger hunt, seeing a movie, playing soccer with local youth, the options are unlimited, fun and highly organized!
2. Language Classes: Ten, four hour afternoon language classes provide campers with fun and highly personalized language instruction. The MAXIMUM CLASS SIZE IS 4 STUDENTS in order to provide each student the greatest level of interaction and personalized attention from the Costa Rican instructor. The language school portion of your trip allows you to get serious in a super encouraging environment. Our Spanish immersion school takes place in two lovely, secure and fully equipped campuses.
Families (and Spanish teachers) are AMAZED by camper progress on Costa Rica Spanish 14. Campers improve their comfort level in speaking and writing in Spanish. Campers have a ton of fun and improve tremendously. Bold Earth is clear that summer is a time to have fun in a completely new environment with friends for life. Yes, classes are graded but only for your feedback. Yes, there are homework assignments and workbooks but they are strictly for your advancement in Spanish. Most campers do homework with their family – it is PERFECT!
• Homestays – 9 nights, 1 camper per family to encourage Spanish Immersion. Families are carefully screened and students love their home-stay family!
• Hotels – 4 nights
Bold Earth carefully selects hotels to be comfortable and authentic.
Homestays are often the highlight of the trip, allowing you the opportunity to really connect with locals. Home-stay families are very carefully selected and screened and have been working with Bold Earth for years. Host families are reimbursed for their hospitality.
Should you bring a gift for your host family? A gift is not necessary or expected. If you would like, we suggest a picture of your family, a school activity or a cool picture of where you live are nice gifts to share. Some people bring a memento from their home town as a gift. Another gift that is appreciated is a book in English for the local school or library. Children’s books in English are especially well received.
BOLD EARTH HOST FAMILIES ARE AMAZING! Caring, friendly and sweet. THOUSANDS of Bold Earth students have enjoyed and found the Costa Rica homestay to be a highlight. Host families are carefully screened and paid to host Bold Earth students. It is our job and responsibility to provide safe, safe and safe homestays!
• One Camper per Family (Maximize language learning).
• Homestays are comfortable and modern (nice bathrooms, refrigerators, etc.). Not a hut in the jungle.
• All campers live in same neighborhood – trip leaders are very nearby.
• Campers are together as a group from 8am – 6pm
• Campers with host-family for dinner and sleeping.
Bold Earth students spend a moderate amount of time with their host families. Almost all of every day you are together with your group. Every camper’s home is visited by your trip leader during your stay. All campers have their own private room and access to a western-style (YES, toilets and hot water!) bathroom. All families have telephones and our leaders carry cell phones. If there is ever the slightest problem we immediately switch host families. Most students find Bold Earth language trips to not only prepare them for high school Spanish but also to prepare them for college study abroad programs. WOW!
Thousands of students have successfully enjoyed homestays with Bold Earth. It is common to be nervous and we understand! Not convinced? Speak directly with Bold Earth Costa Rica Alumni. E-mail or call our office to immediately receive references.
Community Service is a Bold Earth core value. Bold Earth carefully chooses hands on community service projects that are active, engaging and . . . LIFE CHANGING! All Bold Earth participants will receive a certificate to document their service hours.
Service Credit: 8 Hours
Project #1: Spending the day working with the Costa Rican Humanitarian Foundation is a life changing experience. A very active and interesting service project, Bold Earth participants help to construct and beautify a day care center. Working alongside local families, Bold Earth campers speak only in Spanish while also giving back to the local “Tico” community.
Project #2: Located in the mystical Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, our next community service project is located at the Finca Ecologica. Following a morning of Spanish class, we visit the Ecological Reserve to learn about forest systems and the role the Reserve plays in global ecological awareness. Campers plant trees to enhance wildlife habitats and the natural experience for future generations.

Costa Rica is a WONDERFUL place to travel. Full of culture, natural beauty and educated citizens, campers are immersed in a new language and a sophisticated country. Costa Ricans, known as “Ticos” are proud, happy and successful. Campers are always impressed by Costa Rica.

Costa Rican summer weather is pretty much perfecto, 80°-90°F, 26°-32°C. Frequent afternoon rainstorms cool down the day and usually do not interfere with our activities.
Keep in mind, one of main reason we visit Costa Rica is because it’s covered in amazing rain forests rich with wildlife, birds and incredible beauty.
Bold Earth campers love to eat – we do too! Good thing Costa Rican food is delicious, healthy and diverse. Popular foods in Costa Rica include rice, beans, chicken, fresh fish, fruit and vegetables. Bold Earth and host families always provide plenty of delicious and nutritious food, and campers help cook during homestays!
Costa Rican cuisine is known for being flavorful, yet fairly mild, with LOTS of fresh fruit and vegetables. Rice and black beans are a staple of most traditional Costa Rican meals, often served three times a day; gallo pinto, a breakfast dish of rice and beans mixed together with onions and bell peppers, is often considered the Costa Rican national dish.

A TRUE IMMERSION EXPERIENCE!
The entire Bold Earth Costa Rica Spanish trip was a success. Everything from Spanish school, the home stays, and all the amazing activities were incredible. I have no complaints about the trip at all!
PARENTS, Debbie & Glen: Scott told us that his time with Bold Earth in Costa Rica was the best summer of his life! (And we have gone on some great trips!) He was extremely impressed with the native Costa Rican guide and felt that he had a true immersion experience with the host families. He made a lot of friends, improved his Spanish (his current Spanish teacher has already complimented Scott on his speaking abilities), and just had a wonderful experience which he will treasure throughout his life. We couldn't be happier with Bold Earth. Thank you and keep up your hard work to make Bold Earth the best company for teen travel.
Costa Rica Spanish was amazing! Meeting all the new people was probably the most valuable part and everyone in our group became really close. The classroom courses were also very helpful in learning Spanish, and I definitely got a lot out of the classes. Overall, I would say this is the best trip I have ever gone on in my life.
BEST TWO WEEKS OF MY LIFE!
Costa Rica Spanish was honestly the best two weeks of my life. I made great friends, Learned a ton of Spanish and I had great leaders and I had the opportunity to see other cultures that I wouldn't be able to see if I traveled alone. There was never a dull moment on this trip. I loved being with the group and doing a bunch of fun activities. It was a great trip!
I really loved my summer in Costa Rica with Bold Earth. The group was amazing, the leaders were incredible, and all the places we've visited couldn't have been be better!
PARENTS, Veerle & Martijn: Excellent organization! Our daughter Emma had the best two weeks of her life! (her own words).
Costa Rica Spanish was the best experience I've had in my life by far. I'll remember this trip my whole life, and I'd definitely do it again.
PARENTS, Leanne & Brant: I was touched and amazed by how much Will loved his Costa Rica experience. What a great group of kids. And from what I could tell, the planning was top notch. Sara (Trip Leader) offered both praise for Will and a bit of constructive criticism. Will loved her. Thank you!
GREAT CAMP LEADERS!
PARENTS, Dena & Kenneth: Costa Rica Spanish was a fantastic experience for Cori -- so well run, great camp leaders, fun activities. Really wonderful. Thank you so much!
I WILL NEVER FORGET IT!
Costa Rica Spanish was awesome! I had so much fun and I'll never forget it.
PARENTS, Dorian & Mark: All in all, I would recommend Bold Earth because Tatum had a fantastic, wonderful time and loved her trip leaders, the host families and the adventures!
My Bold Earth experience was fantastic. I had a great time, met great people, learned more Spanish, and helped good people. Everything was successful-- everything.
PARENTS, Suzy & David: Sam had a terrific time on his Costa Rica Spanish trip and seemed to grow in both confidence and maturity. He loved the home-stays and really enjoyed spending time with both his Costa Rican families. He definitely got to see more than just the tourist side of Costa Rica, but also had a great time surfing, zip-lining and doing other adventures. It was a big success!
PARENTS, Maja & Stanley: The activities were really educational, challenging and fun. Marina came back with more self assurance. We have only good feedback for the Trip Leaders. Overall Marina has had a great experience on Costa Rica Spanish.
I had a wonderful time on the Bold Earth Costa Rica Immersion trip. It was great the way Bold Earth makes it a priority to maximize the home-like feeling in the group. I never thought I would survive without my cell phone and all of my social networking websites, but I'm glad that I didn't have access to them during the trip. The bonding time is the most important part of the whole group, and I'll never forget anyone on this trip. It's a whole new family for me. It was a once in a lifetime experience and I'm so grateful to everyone who made it happen!
PARENTS, Valerie & Gary: We are so glad we we able to provide Harley with this opportunity. We are confident it is an experience that she will cherish for a lifetime and likely grow to appreciate even more when she older.
We appreciate the professionalism and structure of the entire Bold Earth program. We are confident that Harley has made new friends for life, has had experiences that will add to her personal growth and has had important exposure to alternate cultures! Thank you Bold Earth and Sara for everything!
Costa Rica Spanish was life changing. One of the best experiences I will ever have.
PARENTS, Diane & Bill: Because Melanie was lucky enough to be placed in a group of 100% compatible kids, she had the time of her life in Costa Rica. She made friends that she absolutely would not have made any other place or time. Her favorite activities were all of the activities!
I wanted to take a moment to let you know how very helpful Costa Rica Spanish 14 has turned out to be for Megs from an academic viewpoint. We had not chosen the program with any academic goal in mind, but Megs has remarked several times since school started that she doesn't know how she would be surviving Spanish IV if she had not gone on the Bold Earth Costa Rica Spanish trip. Also, at "Meet the Teacher" night, all the other parents were complaining about how worried their kids are about the class being entirely in Spanish, and Megs has been completely unfazed by it.
